POETRY: Its Hard Out Here

It's hard out here

It is hard out here

To be vulnerable

To be black

A black man

A black women

A black child

To be black and conscious

You are a target

They will try to silence you

Remove your voice from this Earth

Yet they do not understand your power

Your melanin runs deep

And your words and soul have not left this Earth

Even if they steal it from you

Your name will forever reside in our hearts

As we continue

Still searching for justice, peace , a real sense of humanity

Beginning to understand who we are as people

Recognizing the King and Queen in one another

And ourselves

Loving our melanin, dark or light

Through good and bad times

Our voices will speak for you

Sandra Bland

Trayvon Martin

Mike Brown

Oscar Grant III

Tyshawn Lee

So many names

There should not be this many names

Young, old and in between who have died unjustly

How does this make sense?

Like I said

It's hard out here

It is hard out here

To be black and conscious

To be a black person

To be a black man

To be a black women

To be a black child

So unprotected

No innocence insight

Rights being ignored

No indictments for deaths that could have been prevented

I don't understand

Can you explain?

We deserve better

To be respected

Our skin may be different

Yet we are human

We bleed, we feel, we hurt

Our black is beautiful

It is timeless and everlasting

So although

It may be hard out here

To be black

Whether man, woman or child

To be black is where we want to be

And we will fight

Black and proud

It is hard out here

We are melinated

And standing tall
