Interview with photographer Tre Henry
This week, I had the opportunity of interviewing 21-year-old Tre "Han Solooo" Henry, an amazing photographer with a passion for capturing portraits, events and also candid shots of his muses. Bringing photos to life is what Henry does best. Here's what Tre had to say about his journey in photography.
Where are you from?
TH: I'm actually from Philadelphia, PA. Northeast Philly, that's kind of like the suburbs (laughs) i lived there for fifteen years of my life.
What made you want to be a photographer?
TH: I can say, when i lived in South Carolina, there was a couple of people that i knew that was doing photography. I told myself i can actually see my self doing that type of stuff. I used to be an artist, i use to draw a lot when i was younger, i use to draw any and everything. This first thing i drew was something from Dragon Ball Z, i think that was probably what every kid was doing at that time. After that got into doing more aesthetic drawings, i stopped doing that for a while because i didn't really know what i was going to do with it. I went into High School not knowing what i actually wanted to do, prior to my last year, actually after i graduated i was with my friends on Instagram looking at this guy i went to school with page. I was thinking like dang he's really nice with it, i can do this type of stuff I'm an artist this is something i can obviously do. I just took on the challenge got my camera. My first camera was in 2013, and its been on every since then.
What inspires your style of photography?
TH: Just the people I've been around, i get inspired by following a lot of magazines. I really want to do editorial a lot more like campaigns for companies like, Gap, Versace etc. Anything that's up there i could dip my hands into i would love to do that. The photographers I'm around also inspire me. One of my best friend's named Jerry who's also photographer,
and also a couple of other people that I've talked to. This guy named Richie, his name is dvvinci on Instagram, and another dude named Kojie. So I'm always watching them, i don't have to be around them to watch them, so I'm always kind of like trying to mimic their style but put my own twist on it and rock with it.
What message do you hope to send through your work?
TH: Hmmm.. See that's something i don't know yet. I haven't figured that out. I'm just trying to be artistic as possible and show like just being creative as you can be. Just be inspired by people. As for a message, i haven't quite got into that field yet. Everybody has their message already, because of what they want to see. Especially with the Black Lives Matter, there's so many artist that's doing that, and it's dope but that's not my lane, i can't put myself into that lane. I can't copy that, that's for them what i want to do is editorial.
What has been your favorite photo shoot so far?
TH: Its always the ones with my friend Destiny. You've probably seen her on my page her name is Des Brown. Every photo shoot i do with its always an progression. Its kind of fun because I'm best friends with her so we always do crazy stuff, we're always throwing back ideas. So it's always good to have that type of person in a friendship. We always come up with great shoots, have fun, every photo is perfect. She critiques everything and also pushes me a lot.
What's your creative process and how do you come up with concepts?
TH: Basically just off of magazines i look at. Paper magazine, Naked, Vogue, Elegant. Just like going down and trying to come up with different ideas. That's basically how i think a lot of photographers come up with concepts. You can create your own, but there's a lot of concepts where somebody has already done it you just have to do it better than them and do it your own way. So that's what i always do just do it my own way. Its impossible to mimic every photo, its impossible. So you're going to basically end up doing it your own way regardless, sometimes it can be a fail sometimes it can't.
Who would you like to work with in the near future?
TH: Fka Twigs! I think in paper magazine she did a photo shoot with them, it was just crazy. I think she''ll push you into what she would like to see. She's amazing like she's dope. I love the way they did the concept with her which was like crazy. It was all black and white and little bit of contortion it was amazing. Amazing photo shoot, loved it.
What advice would you give up and coming photographers?
TH: Basically just keep shooting and put yourself out, there. I'm still putting myself out there, so i can't really say "oh I'm top notch" or anything like that. Its hard but you have to keep focus, stay driven, don't let anybody tell you ''don't do free photo shoots you need to get to paper". You're not always going to get money, i mean if somebody comes to you then definitely, you should get your paper for it. If it's something creative and you're collaborating with a person, and that person is somewhere you want to be, you don't have to always charge, you never know what you can get out of that. You can build a friendship, that's smart business you have to pick and choose who you're working with. That's basically it just stay focus, pick and choose who you work with, have a good group of people in your corner, don't let anybody tell you what you can and can't do.
